Furnished With Faith: Best Ideas for a Christian Home Décor

If someone asks me to define “home”, well, for me, I’d say it’s the place where I get unconditional love, acceptance, understanding and forgiveness. It’s my safe haven in the darkest of times. It becomes then obvious that the place which is the base of your existence should be full of design inspiration. That reminds me of when my best friend bought a house and I convinced her to let me handle the décor of her house.

Well, I don’t know how to sugarcoat things, so I will be honest and say it. I suck at interior decorating. Phew. There. I finally said it. Back then, I had no idea I was going to create a huge mess out of 4 000 square feet of blank canvas. In the end, the house looked nothing like I expected; that is straight out of a West Elm catalogue. Instead, it looked more like a toy store – and certainly not like the trendy Pottery Barn type, but more the cheap plastic one. Heck, I’m still embarrassed from my half-assed attempt at a Caribbean-styled décor by overstuffing the dining room table with seashells. At least, I learned that we can’t all be good at everything.

However, if you are looking for home décor ideas inspired by Christian beliefs to lighten up your house, I might be the right person for you.

Let me make it clear: Home décor, in general, is not my strength – I don’t know what a complementary color is, I don’t know how to hold a paintbrush and don’t ask me if crisp lines and abstract patterns can be combined – but, growing up in a Christian home made me learn a lot about faith-based interior décor.

As a Christian, I’ve learned the importance of bringing beauty, warmth and comfort using the word of God. As believers and followers of Christ, we all know and have seen the goodness of God. So, why not bring and incorporate this same goodness into our homes?

Go For Simple and Humble

Go For Simple and Humble

“Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.’

– From James 4:10

‘That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”

– From James 4:6

I’ve mentioned it previously in one of my other articles; remember that you are incorporating your faith in your home because you want to be reminded of God’ grace and love and grow closer to Him. So, don’t spend tons of money on expensive tapestries and extremely prominent religious-quality stuff; you don’t need these to showcase your devotion to God.

If you really want to create a Christian-inspired interior, it is recommended to incorporate simplicity and humbleness.

Let There Be Light

Let There Be Light

“Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.”

– From John 8:12

“Walk as children of Light”

– From Ephesians 5:9

If there’s one element that can define a Christian home décor, it’s lighting.

If you are looking for a warm and relaxing atmosphere, I suggest decorating your living room with a chandelier. Today, you can even find lanterns with the cross symbol engraved into them. These lanterns can be decorated with a beautiful bushel of flowers and trailing bittersweet berries, seedpods, pine cones and all tied up with a bright burlap ribbon and placed in the kitchen or dining room. Or, you could also match the cross-shaped lanterns with the flickering candles to add a somewhat cozy touch to the patio.

Depending on your preference and the room you’re decorating, you could play with different lights to make the space dimmer or brighter.
