Where to get your kitchen cabinets, countertops, and woodworking?

As beautiful as it is sturdy, teak worktops have many advantages, but they must be chosen carefully to meet all your expectations.

Note: there are other wood worktops, such as bamboo, which is exotic and robust.

Characteristics of the teak worktop

Teak is a slow-growing exotic wood. Originally a beige-brown colour, it takes on a deeper colour with copper highlights when exposed to light. It is naturally rich in oleoresin, which makes it oily and naturally protects it from moisture by waterproofing it.

Teak is used indoors and outdoors to make furniture, flooring, carpentry, etc.

There are, moreover, three grades of teak, defining its quality but also its price:

Grade A: this is the highest quality of teak and therefore the most expensive. The worktop has been made from trees over 30 years old. The heart of the tree is worked, a part with fewer defects and richer in oil, thus ensuring a uniform colour and outstanding durability to the worktop.

Grade B: corresponds to the middle of the range. The colour of the worktop is relatively homogeneous, but the wood has more knots while retaining its strength.

Grade C: This is the lowest quality. The teak worktop was made from younger trees, and the wood was taken from the periphery. The colour being less uniform, the teak is treated (oiled) to homogenize it. This is the lowest grade of teak, but also the cheapest.

Note: If you want to make sure that your teak worktop complies with the procedures for sustainable forestry, check for the “Forest Stewardship Council” (FSC) or “Conseil pour la bonne gestion des forêts” label.

Sturdy and durable, it is shock resistant.

Decorating tip: to make the solid teak worktop stand out, it can be combined with glass and metal kitchen furniture. And to keep the wood visible, the sink can be hidden under a teak cover.

On the downside, the teak worktop is still susceptible to scratches. But if it is damaged, it will always be possible to sand it.

Maintaining a teak worktop is easy because it does not need to undergo any specific protective treatment. Daily, a simple sponge wipe with soapy water is all that is necessary.

At least once a year, it is recommended to use linseed oil after brushing or sanding.
